Mr. John D. Baker
Assistant General Organizer
International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO

John D. Baker was unanimously elected Assistant General Organizer for the International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO, at the union’s quadrennial convention in July 2007. Baker previously served on the ILA’s Executive Council for 18 years as Vice President representing the Great Lakes region. He currently also holds, since 1982, the elected position of President of the Great Lakes District Council, Atlantic Coast District, ILA. Baker’s ILA career spans nearly a half century where he rose from longshoreman in the Port of Cleveland to one of organized labor’s most respected leaders. In his home port of Cleveland and ILA Local 1317, Baker has served as Secretary-Treasurer since 1965. He also is completing his 23rd year as President of the Cleveland Maritime Port Council, AFL-CIO. Baker is the chief negotiator for ILA contracts covering some 8,000 members at U.S. and Canadian Great Lakes ports. |

Baker also serves as President of the Great Lakes Maritime Task Force, working with other maritime and political leaders in bringing additional cargo into the Great Lakes region. He currently is serving an appointment on the International Association of Great Lakes Ports and was named by the Ohio governor to serve on the Governor’s Labor Advisory Committee.
He has been part of 25 International Trade missions promoting the Great Lakes ports to shippers from around the world.
Baker served for many years as Assistant Legislative Director, representing Great Lakes Ports and also is on the ILA’s Political Fund committee.
Baker has been honored by numerous organizations throughout his career. He has received the ILA’s Owen Cavanaugh Distinguished ILA Member Award, he has been awarded the State of Israel Labor Medal for Distinguished Labor Leadership and the Irish Good Fellowship Club Award 2001.
The local labor leadership in Cleveland honored Baker with its Leadership Cleveland Class of 1989 Award for work with trade unions in Ohio.
Baker and his wife, Louise, reside in Willoughby, Ohio and are the parents of three children and four grandchildren.
