valign="bottom"><span class="content_date">2/16/2010</span></td></tr> </table> <div class="blue_line"></div> <br> Yes, you read it correctly, 8000 plus years of recorded service to date to honor members who have retired from Miami Checkers Local 1922 and its sister mechanics Local 1922-1. Local president Gerardo (Jerry) Becerra, with assistance from member John Bruns, Jr., conceived the preparation of two impressive honor plaques. <br /><br /> Representing the two locals chartered in 1965 and 1972 respectively, each wall plaque displays individual platelets imprinted with the names of all former union members. To date this totals 217 checkers and 162 mechanics along with nine executive members. As subsequent members complete their service, their names will be added. <br /><br /> The plaques have been proudly displayed as an enduring testimony to the many hours served as loyal union members. They stand in recognition of the dedication to the two locals which helped develop Miami into one of the premier ports in today s modernized maritime shipping industry. Both plaques were unveiled before their respective memberships amid vigorous applause and appreciation from the members. Assuring all present that at some future date, each individual s name would join those already displayed.
