ILA New York-New Jersey Members and Families

NORTH BERGEN, NJ - The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO has established a Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund for its membership and families living and working in the New York New Jersey area who were affected by the devastating storm. The Greater Metropolitan area was hard-hit by Hurricane Sandy on October 29 and 30 with lives lost, homes destroyed and may port areas damaged. Many ILA members are still without power some 11 days after the storm.

"Hundreds of members in the New York-New Jersey area have suffered terrible losses as a result of this devastating hurricane," said President Harold J. Daggett. "Lives have been lost, many more have been injured, homes destroyed and jobs eliminated. It is our duty and obligation as ILA members to help our brothers and sisters in need."

President Daggett announced today that the ILA has established a Hurricane Sandy Relief Fund and will be seeking donations from union members to be distributed to ILA members affected by the storm. One members of ILA Local 824 had her Staten Island home ripped off its foundation and totally destroyed. Another Staten Island member's sister-in-law drowned in her home by surging water from Hurricane Sandy.

The ILA had established as similar fund in September 2005 to aid ILA victims of Hurricane Katrina that struck the Gulf Coast.

"Whenever an ILA member is in need, Sister and Brother members of our great union are always ready to lend a hand," said President Daggett.

Contributions to this hurricane relief fund should be made payable to the ILA with a notation on the check that the funds are designated for the Hurricane Sandy relief effort. Contributions should be mailed to the ILA-Hurricane Sandy Fund, 5000 Westside Avenue, North Bergen, New Jersey 07047.
