Gerry Becerra (at left) , ILA International Vice President and President, ILA Local 1922, Port of Miami, walks picket line with members of three ILA locals in the Port of Miami representing drivers, mechanics and warehouse workers are on strike since October 1. after employers refused to budge on stripping almost 120 workers of all benefits. The ILA was negotiating for a month prior to the expiration of the old contract on Sept. 30. All three trucking companies: Southern Ocean Transportation, Port Everglades Transportation and Southern Star Transportation along with the warehouse employer, Southern Star Cargo Warehouse and the mechanics employer Southeastern Container Repair looked to strip the ILA workers of nearly all benefits: no pension, vacation, and holiday pay. Furthermore, employers offered no dental and an HMO health plan run by them with the ILA member paying the entire deductible through a payroll deduction. The ILA has had a contract with these employers for 30 years.
