ILA President Elected to Executive Board of International Transport Workers Federation

LONDON (England) - Richard P. Hughes, President, International Longshoremen’s Association, AFL-CIO was named this week to the Executive Council of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) as a Vice President for North America. The ITF is an international trade union federation of transport workers’ unions, representing some 4.5 million workers from 653 unions in 148 countries.

At ITF Executive Council meetings being held in London, England this week, Mr. Hughes was named to the world-wide labor board, replacing former ILA president John Bowers. In his new position as one of four Vice Presidents representing North America for the ITF, Mr. Hughes will also serve on the ITF Management Committee.

The ITF has a long and impressive history of aiding affiliated unions better serve their membership and protect their rights.

The ITF post is the second labor Executive Board Mr. Hughes has joined the past two months. In early March, he was named as a Vice President and Executive Board member of the American Federation of Labor, Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO).
