class="content_sandbox"> <tr> <td align="center"><h2>Rank-and-file ILA Members Invited To Join Local 333, UMD, ILA On Picket Line This Monday to Support Striking Kosnac Workers</h2></td> <td Rank and file members at the International Longshoremen s Association, AFL-CIO from the Port of New York and New Jersey will be joining their Sisters and Brothers members from Local 333, Untied Marine Division (UMD) on the picket line this Monday, November 23, 2009 beginning at 7 a.m. The ILA tugboat workers union has been on strike against Kosnac for more than two months in a battle which the local characterizes  to defend safe manning in the harbor. <br /><br /> In the late summer, Kosnac demanded that Local 333, UMD agree to manning cuts that  place our members in grave danger, said William Harrigan, president of the tugboat local. Specifically, the company sought to eliminate a third deckhand after 10 hours when doing stone or aggregate work. If these cuts were incorporated, deckhands making up scows would work more than 10 hours with no relief. <br /><br /> President Harrigan this week updated ILA members at the New York-New Jersey District Council and it was agreed that, to show support and solidarity for the striking tugboat workers, the ILA would join the picket line on Monday. <br /><br /> "Our members that have been on strike are making tremendous sacrifices to fight was is right and just," said Mr. Harrigan. <br /><br /> According to the UMD, Local 333 was reasonable at the bargaining table, recognizing that Kosnac is a small company trying to operate in a weak economy. The union agreed to a wage freeze and other concessions, but felt the reduction in manning would put UMD members lives at risk. The union said that even with the current manning minimums, several deckhands have been injured doing this work. Some have been killed. <br /><br /> UMD described the work of deckhands, having to jump from barge to barge, tying them together and creating chains of up to sixteen barges. <br /><br /> "This task is often done at night with poor lighting  sometimes just a flash light  and in choppy waters," Harrigan said. "Barges tend to slam together like bumper cars but with no bumpers to cushion the blows. Deckhands need to be alert and well-rested to perform this work. <br /><br /> President Harrigan said Kosnac, a company that has been involved in the New York maritime industry since the late 1920s, does not need manning cuts to remain profitable, but is using the poor economy to exploit and endanger their workers in order to fatten their wallets. <br /><br /> UMD intends to stand firm and united in this battle and is hopeful the ILA s participation on Monday will bring resolution.  If Kosnac gets away with dangerously reducing manning, said Harrigan,  other companies will surely try it as well. <br /><br /> It is hoped that rank-and-file members from all ILA locals in the Port of New York and New Jersey will participate on the picket line this coming Monday. <br /><br /> Those joining the UMD pickets on Monday should gather outside Kosnac Floating Derrick Corp., 1435 Richmond Avenue, Staten Island.
